Bobby Fischer, 1943-2008

Bobby Fischer, March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008, was buried today. The funeral was at the Laugardalur Catholic Church just outside of Selfoss, which is about 37 miles south of Reykjavik. According to Reverend Kristinn Agust Fridfinnsson, Fischer's Last Will And Testament mandated a private ceremony with only a few people in attendance. Gardar Sverrisson and Miyoko Watai were among those present.

According to the archives of the former GothicChessLive.com server, the last game played by Fischer was on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at approximately 1:32 PM Eastern. It was a 10/0 game against me where he let 7 minutes come off of his clock at the start of the game before making move 1. The game went 55 moves ending in a repetition draw with Bobby still having about 30 seconds on his clock. The 'umbra' account on GothicChessLive never signed on again.

Goodbye and Farewell Bobby! I wished I could have met you personally. You were the greatest and I'm a big fan of your brilliant games. May you rest in peace.

Bobby sure was a walking paradox, super strong at chess, able to destroy everyone, yet sometimes afraid to play!

His games when he was younger were just phenomenal. His trouncing the world's best in back to back 6-0 whitewashings as he was on the way to being World Champion will be talked about forever.

Bobby, we miss you, we wish you could have played more!

Very sad day for chess but a sigh of relief is breathed by those on the opposite side of his tantrums. I remember seeing 'umbra' crush you in one game where he played you like a fool, and I missed the game where you got the draw but I saw it when the GCL archives were still around. Post that game again I loved that Queen sac he had but I forget the details of it.

I was around for the Fischer boom of '72 and I'd have to say that he was responsible for getting me interested in chess. I was just someone interested in chess who became a tournament player and eventually rose to 1800 and I'd be a patzer who can't tell Alekhine's Defense from the Queen's Gambit if it wasn't for Bobby.

I'll miss the chess genius and not the later nutcase. Adios Bobby, and good luck whipping Lasker up there!

I read that he refused to take medication doctors perscribed for him and that eventually killed him. Does anyone have any more details? It's a shame if his own distrust or paranoia claimed his life in the end.
