Ed, did anyone ever tell you you've got forearms like Popeye the Sailor man?

Well, I did eat my spinach!

Actually, in the 6 years I rowed on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, all of my coaches told me I was holding the oars too tightly. After each row I would tell them that my forearms seemed "way too pumped", after all, there were plenty of skinny kids on the team who were seemingly refreshed after practice. Me, I could hardly turn the steering wheel of the car!

I tried holding the oars with less than a "death grip", but, invariably, this would lead to some tragic release of the oar which is deadly in crew. At full speed, if your oar hits the water out of time, the pressure against the surface of the oar can rip you right out of the boat. And, if your oar is flailing around in the oarlock, if it hits someone, it's like a javeline going through you.

So I had this mortal fear of that, and I clung onto it like I was dangling from a skyscraper.

So now I look like Popeye!
