New Gothic Chess Playing Site

Thursday, February 7, 2008, at 12 noon Eastern, the new place to play Gothic Chess will be at http://www.Gothic-Chess.com

I just logged on to test the site and took some screen shots, as shown above, so I know it is working. Spread the word, invite your friends, and let's have a big showing this coming Thursday!

It seems (from the pictures) as if those relaunch would also work fine on Mac OS X computers! This promises to become a very to be welcomed attractive place.

And I hope for some old weaknesses of the prior Java applet to be repaired then, as there had been the problem of a save reconnect after having experienced an unwanted break down of the line.

So I am crossing my fingers, that this GC Online relaunch would have a good and much frequented future.

I tested it on an older Macintosh running OS X, and it seems to work, so I would think that newer machines would be even more stable.

To get your old account names and passwords back, go here:

And, in case anyone has not heard, R.I.P. Cartaphilus, who died about a week ago.

If it's possible somehow or another to access the site using Winboard F that would be grand.

Way to go, anyway.

Good luck.

That might be difficult, as I am not sure at all that this server uses the same protocol as 'normal' Internet Chess Servers like FICS and ICC. It couldn't without modification anyway, as those protocols send a board position for each move, and the board is 8x8. So to use it for Gothic would require an extension of the protocol, both on the server side as for WinBoard.

I have not made that extension yet in WinBoard_F, as it seemed pointless to do so if there were no servers offering this game. If the protocol that this new server uses is a straightforward extension of the normal ICS protocol, it would be a minor change to make WinBoard_F work with it. OTOH, if it is an entirely new protocol, (which I fear), it would be a hopeless endeavor.

At some point in time that will be a feature, but for now, the focus will be on getting a playing population enthused about the online site.
